Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

Ingredients

1 bag of chocolate morsels

1-2 pints of strawberries

1 t. vegetable based shortening

See list below for other optional ingredients

Cooking Directions

Rinse strawberries well, discarding any that are discolored or mushy.  Pat dry with paper towels and set aside.

Lay out 2 or more cookie sheets, depending on how many strawberries you will be making.  Cover each cookie sheet with waxed paper.

Put morsels in a microwave- safe dish and add the teaspoon of shortening to them.  Heat in the microwave for 20 seconds and stir.  Continue to heat, 10 seconds each time, until the morsels have completely melted.  Be careful not to burn the chocolate.

Dip the strawberries in the chocolate and set each on waxed paper to dry.  If your home is especially warm and you find that they do not harden, you can pop them into the refrigerator to set.

Optional ingredients and steps

Melt white chocolate in the same manner detailed above.  Dip a spoon into the white chocolate and drizzle it on top of the already dipped chocolate strawberries.

Right after dipping the strawberry in the chocolate, you can dip them into chopped nuts, coconut, or sprinkles.  If you prefer, you can sprinkle these extra ingredients on top once you lay the strawberries onto the waxed paper.

Strawberries with long stems make for an elegant look.  Choose them whenever they are available in the grocery.
