Specializing in Handmade Brie & Camembert
Marin French Cheese Company is the oldest cheese manufacturer in the USA and a unique part of American history . Known by locals as The Cheese Factory and by its brand name, Rouge et Noir , Marin French has produced hand-crafted Artisan soft-ripened cheese since 1865. Rouge et Noir cheeses are similar to French and European varieties but reflect the characteristics of Northern California, producing its own regional style. We produce America’s original California Brie and Camembert, along with other delicious and award-winning cheeses.
This serene Marin County facility makes World Champion soft-ripened cheeses from goats’ and cows’ milk. These include Breakfast Cheese, Brie, Camembert, Triple Crème Bries and Blues as well as Schloss and Schlosskranz which are both close cousins to Liederkranz. All Artisanal cheeses are hand -made with authentic Old World European cultures. Rouge et Noir brand cheeses have won top awards at the California State Fair, American Cheese Society Competitions as well as Gold medals at the World Cheese Awards in Europe. In 2005 and again in 2010, the Triple Crème Brie beat the French in a world-renowned competition which was written up in the San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times and the Wine Spectator.
Marin French Cheese Co. participates and supports numerous community events such as Make A Wish, Meals on Wheels, San Francisco Junior League, La Soiree, artist’s retrospectives, CINEQUEST, Mill Valley Film Festival, The Relay Art Point events at the S.F. de Young Museum and is featured at numerous wine events such as Pinot Days and Rhone Rangers tastings.
Marin French is located north of San Francisco, west of Napa County, east of Pt. Reyes and Olema and south of Sonoma County. Its pastoral setting with 700 acres of rolling hills, a duck pond, lovely picnic grounds and a retail store make Marin French a mecca for vacationers from afar as well as Bay Area day-trippers, picnickers and cyclists.
There’s even room to park a camper. We rent out space for Barbecues and there is plenty of space for wedding parties.
